However, cases of severe depression warrant medical help. The Lion pose and Child Pose are effective exercises to thwart depression.

Lion Pose: Kneel on the floor. Cross the front of the right ankle over the back of the left. Ensure that the feet point out to the sides. Press the palms against the knees. Take in long breaths from the nose. Open your mouth wide and curl your tongue’s tip towards your chin. Breathe slowly through your mouth. Finally roar two or three times. Change the cross of your legs and repeat.

Child Pose: Kneel on the floor. Touch the toes together and sit on your heels. Separate your knees as required by the width of your hips. Then, lay your torso between the thighs. Touch your forehead and your nose on the ground. Lay your hands with palms facing upwards alongside your torso. One may stay in the pose for around 2 minutes.

We know we love our pets, but did you know they actually keep you healthy? Pets fulfill a variety of needs for their owners. Much like how social interaction is essential to good health, pets offer comfort and companionship that allows for stress reduction and help even an increase in self-esteem.

The most obvious benefit is the social interaction that we have with our pets. They fulfill the natural craving for emotional relationships. The desire to be loved is a powerful one and our animals fill it very well. A snuggle from a kitten or a wet kiss of a dog are equally as loving a hug from a friend or family member.

Stress reduction is another benefit to owning a pet. Petting an animal has been shown to reduce heart rate, blood pressure and even the arteriosclerotic process. Stress can also be alleviated when we talk to our pets. If we can get things off our chests by telling Spot, we often feel some relief, and animals will listen without judgement. Also, it is difficult to be angry or frustrated with something when you see your cat is being silly.

Animals that need to be walked every day will increase the amount of exercise one recieves. Your puppy doesn’t care that you had an exhausting day at work. It’s added motivation to get up and out when you have those big brown eyes looking at you. Certain animals have been shown to improve safety. Whether it is an intruder that they alert you to or if a cat wakes you when there is smoke in the house, many pets have saved there owners’ lives.

Although it is impossible to measure, pets increase their owners sense of worth. Whenever we do something for another living thing that needs us, we feel better about ourselves. They meet our need to care for something or someone else.

One should not rush out and get a pet without thought and consideration. It must be taken in to account the conditions that the pet will be brought into. First, pets are not inexpensive to keep. Vet bills, food and equipment can be more expensive than many realize. Do you have the space for the animal to run around? Do you have the time and patience to exercise the animal? Do you have the discipline to train your new pet? Are you prepared for a few accidents on your carpet while they are being house-broken? These are just a few of things to consider. Discuss these items with people you know who have pets and ask them how they cope with these issues. If you can come to conclusions on these issues, you will be bringing the animal into a positive environment—for the both of you.

Most Americans do not get the recommended eight hours of sleep required for good health, safety and optimum performance. In fact, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recently reported that 63 percent of Americans are sleep deprived.

During stressful times — such as the loss of a loved one, a change in job status or a serious illness — the numbers of those who suffer from sleep deficiency can be even greater. Ironically, this is the time when a good night’s sleep is even more important to facilitate recovery and healing.

The following suggestions may ensure a more peaceful and restorative night’s sleep for the entire household.

Struggling for Much-Needed Rest

People who suffer from anxiety often have difficulty falling asleep, wake up frequently during the night, arise too early in the morning, or experience unrefreshing sleep. These symptoms of insomnia are fueled by stress, grief, worry and disrupted sleep schedules.

One solution to combating insomnia is to create a restful sleep environment in every bedroom in the house. This includes keeping the temperature cool, the light dim and the bed comfortable.

“Choosing a good mattress can make a difference in the quality of sleep you get at night and the way you feel during the day,” said Dr. Gary Zammit from the Sleep Disorders Institute at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Medical Center in New York City. “Most people do not realize that their bed can be preventing them from sleeping well and, in some cases, keeping them awake.”

Insomniacs might consider alternative sleep surfaces to improve their sleep. One alternative is the Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort with adjustable firmness and individualized comfort levels. In studies conducted at Stanford University and Duke University, participants fell asleep faster and experienced better quality, more restorative sleep on the Sleep Number bed than on a traditional innerspring mattress. Stanford University researchers also found that 87 percent of those who slept on the Sleep Number bed experienced a greater percentage of REM sleep with fewer disturbances.

Insomnia can be a forerunner of depression and other health-related problems, so it is important to seek a doctor’s advice if symptoms persist.

Recognizing That Your Body Needs Sleep

For many involved in a crisis, daytime sleepiness is a frequent problem. Even if a person is getting the recommended eight hours of sleep a night, stress and emotional fatigue can cause excessive sleepiness and frequent dozing off. This can be especially harmful for adults since daytime sleepiness can lead to health problems or dangerous situations when they drive.

The best solutions for overcoming daytime sleepiness are to stick to a normal sleep routine and get extra rest if your body needs it. When stressed, adults should pay careful attention to what their bodies are telling them, make good judgments about getting to bed earlier and take frequent naps.

Lack of concentration, nodding off during quiet activities or having trouble waking up in the morning are signs that a child is not getting enough sleep. Parents should remember that if the sleep schedule is disrupted even one night, a child may experience these symptoms.

“Children copy their parents’ sleep patterns, so it’s important for parents to maintain consistent sleep schedules and get enough sleep at night,” says Dr. Zammit. “Getting a good night’s sleep should be a family priority, and it starts with the adults in the household.”

Soothing Bad Dreams

Nightmares — vivid, long, scary dreams — are more frequent during times of stress, anxiety and helplessness. Children aged 3 to 6 are the most common sufferers of bad dreams, but traumatic events can increase the occurrence of nightmares in adults as well.

To avoid the anxiety nightmares can cause, it is important for adults to monitor the amount of television their family watches before bedtime and discuss any disturbing images with their kids. When children have nightmares, parents should comfort them by talking about the bad dream and offering reassurance that they are available whenever needed.

To reduce the chance of having nightmares, adults should avoid eating directly before bedtime and reduce their intake of caffeine and alcohol, as each will increase brain activity that can disrupt sleep.

Do you remember when you were little and it seemed as though sleep overcame you as soon as your head hit your pillow? And you slumbered through the night until morning time? They call it the sleep of the innocent, but don’t you wish you could sleep like that again?

Adult responsibilities, stress, lifestyle and other worries often result in poor sleep habits and once the cycle of tossing and turning begins, it is difficult to return to a decent night’s sleep. Many adults rely on prescription drugs to fall asleep and quite a few are addicted to them! Others ‘self medicate’ and use alcohol and other recreational drugs to try and fall asleep. If you are regularly struggling to sleep well, then you probably need to learn to fall asleep again!

So let’s go back to basics!

And who better to consult than babies! After all babies are the experts at sleeping so why not learn a little from them! Apart from their age and body clock, there are specific reasons that babies fall asleep so well. Let’s have a look at a few of them and see if we can’t borrow some of the tricks!

ROUTINE: Most parents try very hard to get their children into a routine. Regular bedtimes, bath times and mealtimes are something to strive towards. Of course, one cannot be too rigid, but a child on a regular routine will feel secure and will be able to ‘predict’ his environment more easily. It also helps his body clock to start the process of winding down before he actually gets to bed. He knows that after supper comes his bath, a story, a prayer and a good night kiss. When his head hits the pillow, he is ready to meet the sandman!

So try and follow this example. Start a night time routine. Make your evenings more or less predictable along the lines of supper, bath and bed. For at least three weeks try and follow this simple routine and go to bed at the same time each night – about 8 hours before it is time to get up. Wear soft comfortable and cozy nightwear, specifically for sleeping (remember flannel pyjamas?)

EXERCISE: This is something kids do lots of! They don’t stop running around for a minute! Now I am not suggesting that you start running around wherever you go, but regular exercise is one of the best sleep aids around! It’s also free and healthy and has lots of good side effects. Take up a sport, go to the gym or start regular walks. You won’t regret it!

HAVE PEACEFUL EVENINGS: How many times don’t you hear parents saying to their kids “Calm down now, it’s nearly bed time”. Or “You’d better stop running around – you won’t be able to fall asleep!” Perhaps you say this to your own children – with good reason! Do you follow your own advice? Or do you sit up watching thrillers (or even worse the news!) or finishing off the day’s work that you brought home from the office? Sound familiar? Try a different approach. Never watch TV while trying to fall asleep. Rather dim the lights while you get into a hot bath and put on some soothing music. Use aromatherapy in your home – in particular lavender for it’s soporific properties. Be quiet and peaceful for the hour before you go to bed and your body will start to get the message!

OTHER HINTS: Avoid all products with caffeine or sugar after 6pm. That means coffee, cola chocolate and all ‘soda pops’ (fizzy drinks). Also stay away from heavy meals at night. Your tummy will be too busy digesting to allow you to sleep well! Don’t eat red meat, refined products or lots of cheese. Go for pastas, grains, pulses, potatoes and rice. Good evening or bedtime drinks are warm milk, lettuce extract and chamomile tea (sleepy tea) – all safe and proven sleep aids. If you are really struggling, some herbal remedies to aid sleep are Valerian, Passiflora and Kava Kava. Try to put these simple hints to the test for three weeks only. You will be surprised at the difference they make! Should you do this faithfully and still struggle to sleep, consult your doctor.
Wishing you a Good Night !!.

Stress is an abnormal condition that disrupts the normal functions of the body or mind. No two people are affected in exactly the same way, or to the same degree, but most people living in our highly industrialized society suffer from its effects at one or more times during their lives.

SELECTED LIFE EVENTS THAT CAN BRING ON STRESS:

Death of Spouse.

Death of a close family member.

Death of a close friend.

Major personal injury, illness or pregnancy.

Sexual molestation, drug abuse.

Major change in the health or behavior of a family member.

Gaining or losing a new family member.

Sexual difficulties.

Marital separation from mate.

Marriage, marital reconciliation, divorce.

Arguments with spouse, family members, friends, co-workers.

Changes in sleeping habits or change in part of day when asleep.

Vacations, Major holidays. In-law troubles.

Financing major purchases.

Beginning or ceasing formal schooling.

Change in usual type and or amount of recreation.

Change in outside social activities, religions, etc.

Major change in eating habits, Iiving conditions, moving.

Spouse beginning or ceasing work outside the home.

Changing to a different line of work.

Major change in responsibilities at work.

Changes in working hours or conditions.

Troubles with the boss.

Being fired at work.

Starting a new job or career.

Retirement from work.

Business readjustment, changes in financial condition.

Minor violations of the law (e.g., traffic tickets, disturbing the peace, etc.)

Detention in jail or other institution.

Dealing With Work Related Stress

Examples that can cause work related stress are trying to get too much work done in too little time, cutting corners or otherwise taking chances that may put you, or someone else at risk, and trying to get along with superiors and co-workers.

Everybody has days when there simply seems there’s too much work to get done. Trying to get everything done by yourself can bring on stress. Some people try and deal with the pressure by delegating certain jobs to others. If you can unburden yourself and not worry about when and how the work gets done, if you can put full faith and trust in co-workers or subordinates it can be an effective escape valve. Trouble is, most people can’t let go. If you have the type of personality that demands to know how things are going, chances are you’re only increasing the pressure and stress on yourself by constantly worrying if the work is getting done or not.

To lessen stress you must either learn to trust others to get the job done, or prioritize jobs to get rid of “what must be done” first. Many people tend to “put off” the difficult jobs they hate to do until the last possible minute. Of course, this only makes it all the more difficult and stressful when you finally get around to doing what you should have done earlier.

When you feel the “walls closing in on you” if possible, take a break. Many people in trying to relax actually kick their bodies into overdrive by using their break time to either get a nicotine or caffeine fix. Instead of calming you down, both substances being stimulants speed up your body processes. You may think you’re relaxing, but your blood pressure and heart are working harder.

Instead of coffee or cigarettes try a brief chat with friends, a short leisurely walk, even just looking out the window for a few minutes. Never take breaks, or eat lunch at your work station. The point of a break is to get away from whatever work you’re doing. You can’t get your mind off your work if you’re chained to your work area.

Getting along with your co-workers and the boss can be more than a sore point. It can be something you learn to put up with, or it can turn into a festering wound that only gets worse with time. If you’re having problems, get them out in the open. Most managers today at least have some training in dealing with personal problems. If you can’t clear the air or have tried using all the company procedures to resolve a grievance, and you no longer enjoy your job, hate to go to work in the morning, or feel that the pressure is getting to be too much, it may be time to seriously consider a change.

STRESS AWAY FROM WORK

Anyone who’s ever been stuck in a major traffic jam probably has seen the darker side of many people’s personalities. It seems everyone is always in a hurry to either get, or go somewhere, and never seem to allow enough time for the everyday problems that are bound to crop up from time to time.

Banging on the steering wheel, laying on the horn, giving someone the “finger,” or shooting a string of obscenities is only reacting to something that has already happened. You can’t make the guy in front of you go any faster, or prevent someone from cutting you off. Accidents, road repairs, and just plain heavy traffic happens. Learn to deal with it or don’t drive. If you must, at least change your route from time to time. Always allow plenty of time, and try and make all trips as pleasant as possible. You may not realize it, but how you act on your way to work, or on your way home will have either a positive or negative impact. Accept the fact that it’s something you just have to get through so you may as well try and make the best of it.

Most people are smart enough to know that they should set some time aside to take it easy. If you participate in some sports activity, remember you’re doing it to relax! While many people naturally have their competitive nature come to the surface when engaging athletics, don’t lose sight of the fact you’re participating to have fun. Don’t get bent out of shape if you don’t always win or otherwise play up to par. The whole point is to enjoy yourself and forget your everyday worries. Treat it as a night out with the “boys,” or gals and relax!

Families can be as source of support, an oasis away from the everyday pressures or sometimes it’s only a place to grab a few hours sleep and get back in the rat race. Your children, spouse, family members, in-laws can be a source of irritation at times. If someone is constantly doing something that really “bugs you,” tell the offending person or persons and see if things can be straightened out before things get out of control.

A man’s home (a woman’s too) should indeed be a place to rest and relax. Many people find it helpful unwind by sharing the day’s events with their loved ones. It should not develop into a daily routine, nor should you give a detailed blow by blow recap of the day’s events, but when things go wrong, who better to talk to than your family? Holding things back, keeping it inside yourself, almost always does more harm than good and can affect not only your well-being but everyone else in your family as well. Talking things over is a great way to get rid of built up stress that many people overlook.

You should also be a good listener. Don’t unload your problems and have no time for your mate’s or children’s problems. They may seem trivial to you, but they are real problems that need solving just like yours.

A great way to get rid of stress is, every once in a while, do something totally different and unexpected without any prior planning. Don’t fall into a trap when you must do such and such thing a certain way, or at specific time or place. If you always put on a blue suit on Thursday, or go to an Italian restaurant on Tuesday, break the habit every once in a while. Even doing things you like can become stressful if you’re stuck in the same old rut week after boring week.

Stress can best be managed by realizing what you can change about your life and knowing what you can’t. Learn how to recognize the difference and you’ll enjoy life more and be better able to deal the ups and downs that are part of everyone’s life.
