Placental abruption or abruptio placentae is a pregnancy complication wherein there is a complete or partial detachment of the placental lining from the uterine lining.

Placenta is an ephemeral (exists briefly) organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy. Acting as the life support system for the growing baby, the placenta helps provides the baby with oxygen and maternal nutrients. It also helps the baby dispose his waste via the maternal kidneys.

Conversely, in case of a placental abruption, the baby is deprived of oxygen and nutrients, thus leaving both baby and mother in danger.

Causes:

Although the specific causes that lead to a placental abruption are unknown, certain risk factors are believed to raise the risk. These include preeclampsia (pregnancy induced hypertension), trauma or injury to the abdomen, maternal age less than 20 or greater than 35.

In addition, a shorter length of the umbilical cord, a history of uterine fibroids (benign tumors of the uterus) and UTI (urinary tract infections) during pregnancy also play a part.

Symptoms:

Placental abruption usually occurs in the third trimester. However, it can occur any time after the 20th week of pregnancy. Classic signs and symptoms of placental abruption include uterine tenderness, rapid uterine contractions, often without arrest, abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding (sometimes).

Prevention:

While one cannot prevent placental abruption, the risk can be decreased following certain precautions. Quit smoking and avoid alcohol. The risk of placental abruption can also be reduced by maintaining a good pre-conception health, right eating during pregnancy regular sleep patterns and correction of preeclampsia and diabetes.

Treatment:

There is no treatment available that can either fix a detached placenta or can stop it from detaching further. The most preferred treatment is often based on the severity of the separation, location of the separation and the duration of the pregnancy.

In cases of mild placental abruption, a complete bed rest and close monitoring are the most prescribed treatment options. However, in case of a complete separation, delivery (preferably C-section) is often sought as the safest option. Severe bleeding requires an immediate blood transfusion.

Unfortunately, 15 percent of the severe placental abruption cases end in fetal death.

Pregnant women have always been advised to go easy. Now there’s science to back it up.

According to the findings of a new study, pregnancy is not the time for household chores. The study, published in the current issue of the journal Pediatric Epidemiology, found that doing “boring and repetitive” household chores during pregnancy raises the odds of giving birth prematurely.

Doing mentally unstimulating work day-in day-out raises the risk of giving birth at least three weeks early by around 25 percent, researchers warn.

The findings of the study are backed by pregnancy records of nearly 12,000 new moms.

It data collected included details about the mom-to-be’s daily physical activities for both exercise and household chores, job profiles, overall pregnancy health, gestation of pregnancy and baby weight.

The results indicated that moms who indulged in mentally un-stimulating work were more likely to give birth prematurely. Their risk of giving birth at least three weeks before term were around 25 percent higher than moms who abstained doing such jobs.

Researchers believe that doing boring and repetitive tasks increase the levels of stress hormones that are involved in causing labor.

Conversely, switching to a completely sedentary lifestyle spells more trouble, researchers warn. Taking up a completely sedentary lifestyle increases the chances of having an underweight baby, researchers found.

“Pregnancy is not a disease. In fact, most women who are pregnant are healthy and most of them are being delivered of perfectly healthy babies. Women who are healthy and do not have pregnancy complications should not restrict their activities in order to achieve a better pregnancy outcome” lead researcher, Hajo Wildschut, of Erasmus University in Rotterdam stated.

Patrick O’Brien, a consultant obstetrician at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists added, “Exercise is good in pregnancy, it keeps you aerobically fit, it keeps your weight under control, it probably reduces the chances of difficulties and it makes it easier to deal with the birth and after wards.”

Adding more to it, it is made of a specially developed material that tucks in tummies and boosts the boobs.

Designed by the Bhs scientists, the swimsuit’s super-stretchy inner mesh is made of elastane and nylon, the materials that help squeeze and flatten bulges into shape.

The outer layer, also of elastane, smoothes the silhouette and the padded support lifts the boobs, giving the all perfect outline and the sexy cleavage.

“We realized ladies were fretting about showing their bodies. The collection was launched to create an immediate fix to their predicament” a Bhs spokesman said.

So now no more cutting down on favorite foods, no more early morning exercise regimes or tiresome gym sessions, just get into the “diet in a swimsuit” to get that dream figure.

Taking down two glasses of milk a day after workout regimen helps tone muscles and keep off fat, results of a new study claim.

Matching to the findings of a previous study that linked milk intake with increased muscle mass and fat loss in men, the findings of the new study claim to be equally established in women.

“The findings are more challenging because women not only steer clear of resistance training they also tend to steer away from dairy products based on the incorrect belief that dairy foods are fattening” Stu Phillips, professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University said.

During the 12-week study period, the researchers monitored young women who drank either milk or energy drinks post exercise.

Participants were asked not to drink or eat anything except water two hours prior to the training.

Participants then took to their exercise routine. The training consisted of three types of exercise: pushing like bench press and chest fly, pulling like seated lateral pull down and abdominal exercises without weights or the leg exercises which included leg press and seated two-leg hamstring curl. To ensure proper technique, the training was monitored one on one by personal trainers.

Immediately after the exercise routine, one group consumed half a liter of fat free white milk while the other group consumed a similar-looking but sugar-based energy drink. The drinks were consumed one hour post exercise.

“The women who drank milk gained barely any weight because what they gained in lean muscle they balanced out with a loss in fat” said Phillips. “Our data show that simple things like regular weightlifting exercise and milk consumption work to substantially improve women’s body composition and health.”

The findings of the study feature in the June issue of Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise.

Who knew the disruptive and debilitating migraine headaches maybe actually bestow protective effects. According to the results of a latest trail conducted by researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, migraine headaches actually lower the risk of developing breast cancer among women.

Making things brighter, the longer the history of migraine the lower is the risk of developing breast cancer, the researchers touted.

As both migraine and breast cancer are hormonally mediated diseases, therefore it’s “biologically plausible” that migraine sufferers stand a reduced risk of breast cancer, researchers highlighted.

While low levels of estrogen, the primary female sex hormone, are typically associated with severe and frequent migraine attacks in women, breast cancer is directly linked to increased levels of the hormones.

A study of nearly 9,000 American women aged between 34 to 64 years revealed that women with a history of migraine are 26 percent less likely to develop breast cancer as compared to non-migraine sufferers.

Moreover, use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen for alleviating migraine symptoms are also found to lower the breast cancer risk by 12 percent.

The study features in the July issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Abruptio placenta is a very serious and rare condition in pregnancy when part or all of the placenta separates from the uterine wall. This occurs in 1 out of 100 pregnancies and is the leading cause of fetal death in the third trimester. The fetus depends solely on the placenta for oxygen and for food. One percent of fetuses die before birth, and 30-50% die during the birth process. Abruptio placenta can lead to maternal hemorrhage which can be dangerous. However, maternal death is rare.

The main symptom of abruptio placenta is bright red bleeding from the vagina. The bleeding does not always occur, though, because the blood can be trapped behind the placenta or the baby. Other symptoms include abdominal pain, tenderness around the belly, lower back pain, rigidity of the uterus, contractions, and decreased fetal movement.

RISK FACTORS

While the cause of abruptio placenta is generally not known, there are risk factors associated with it. The known risk factors are as follows:

1. High blood pressure, chronic or pregnancy induced (This is the most common risk factor.)

2. Trauma to the abdomen, such as in the case of domestic violence

3. Smoking

4. Cocaine use

5. Use of alcohol

6. Mother over 40 years of age

7. Previous abruptio placenta (increases the risk to 10%)

8. Premature rupture of the amniotic sac

TREATMENT

The diagnosis for abuptio placenta is made by ruling out any other possible causes of the symptoms. Sometimes an ultrasound is used to find the abruption, but it does not detect an abruption every time. If the baby is not in danger the mother will be hospitalized to allow the fetus to mature before delivery. A fetal monitor will be used to observe the baby’s heart rate. If the bleeding is severe or there is apparent danger to the baby, a cesarean will be performed immediately.

Cellulite is formed with the hormone controlled sex-specific structure of the female body. Cellulite is normally resistant to any form of treatment. The best way of battling with cellulite is to prevent its formation.

Diet, exercise and cosmetic treatment are used to prevent cellulite from growing. A person’s diet should balance between her calorie need and calorie input. Drastic dieting to reduce weight encourages the body processes and metabolism to slow down. When a normal weight or desired weight is reached, maintain a diet to restrict the volume of the fat tissues. To reduce cellulite, eat less carbohydrates and fats. Take protein for the bulk of your meals.

Exercise improves the muscular and tissue structure. Exercise also increases blood and lymph flow. This prevents the tissue blockage that leads to the formation of cellulite. However, exercise cannot totally remove cellulite.

Cosmetic treatment is the mechanical removal of cellulite. This involves the process of using a suction pump massage (SPM) to massage the skin. This stimulates lymphatic flow, which in turn encourages drainage and results in the removal of metabolic waste products. The suction pressure causes thermal action between the fat cells. This helps to break down the fat deposits. When this treatment is effective, you’ll experience warmth in your skin. The skin also begins to redden. To compress the fat cells, body wrapping is used after the SPM treatment. This body wrap helps to contour the body. The warp is so effective that it compresses the fat cells.

After your cellulite reduction treatment, your skin should become smooth and lose its former cellulite loaded orange peel look. Your skin will also become more elastic, moist and warm. Internally, your metabolic rate will increase slightly. The temperature of the skin will also therefore increase.

For all the methods of reducing cellulite, diet and exercise are the most important. If you change your diet and exercise regularly, you will keep a check on the cellulite.

Breast cancer is the number two cause of cancer related deaths in women. Any woman can get breast cancer. Ninety percent of early breast cancer is curable. Breast self examination (BSE) can help you notice changes in your breasts.

You can do BSE and it only takes ten minutes a month. Most (80%) lumps are not cancer (but all lumps and other changes in the breast should be checked out be a doctor). For all of these reasons, you should get in the habit of regular BSE. To find out how, Simply read the steps that follow:

15857 For women still menstruating, two or three days after your period ends is the best time for BSE. Your breasts are least likely to be tender or swollen during this interval. For women who no longer menstruate, any time is a good time for BSE, though picking the same day each month will make doing BSE easier to remember. (For women who take hormones, ask your doctor when the best time for BSE is.)

How to do BSE

Stand in front of a mirror with your breasts clearly in view. Look at both breasts for anything unusual, including dimpled, puckered or scaly skin, or any discharge (clear or colored fluid) from nipples.

Then, check for any change in the shape of your breasts. Clasping your hands behind your head, press your hands forward.

Next, press your hands firmly on your hips, continuing to look for shape changes.

Then, bend slightly toward the mirror as you hunch your shoulders and pull your elbows forward.

Begin at your breast’s outer edge, slowly moving your fingers around the whole breast. When you reach your starting point, use a smaller circle and repeat. Keep using smaller and smaller circles until you get to the nipple.

Lastly, remember to check your underarm and upper chest areas too.

Be sure to report any irregularities to your doctor, and remember, a lump is not necessarily cancerous. But to be safe, you must report any irregularity to your doctor immediately.

Finally, in addition to SBE at least once a month, women should have regular mamograms. They can spot breast cancer even before you can.

In the 1900s, the average life expectancy for a woman was 50 years; today, that life expectancy has increased to almost 80, which means that women can expect to live a third of their lives after menopause. In addition to menopause, this article discusses holistic therapies for preventing and treating common female health problems, including PMS, dysmenorrhea, vaginitis, and fibrocystic breast disease.

Diet, vitamin and mineral supplementation, exercise, and stress management are holistic approaches intended to help women regain their health and maintain overall well-being.

Health guidelines for women:

Stop smoking. Cigarette smoking is one of the primary risk factors for lung and breast cancer, and the leading cause of cancer mortality among women;

Maintain good nutrition by reducing fat in the diet and taking calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis;

Get an annual Pap smear to test for cervical cancer;

Get a yearly clinical breast examination in a doctor’s office, combined with self-breast examinations each month;

If over the age of 50, get an annual mammogram;

Protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases.

Fibrocystic breast disease (FBD)–also known as cystic mastitis–is a noncancerous condition marked by the presence of nodules or cysts, which may or may not be accompanied by pain and tenderness. The lumps can be either firm or soft, and may change in size. FBD is typically cyclical, and usually disappears during pregnancy and nursing.

While FBD can develop at any age, it is most likely to appear between the age of 30 and menopause.

To diagnose FBD, a physician extracts fluid from the cysts with a needle. A mammogram is usually taken to rule out cancer.

If FBD is diagnosed, treatment focuses on relieving pain and tenderness, and reducing or eliminating the cysts. While conventional options for severe symptoms include hormonal therapies, which can have undesirable side effects such as weight gain, growth of facial and bodily hair, headaches, fatigue, blood clots, depression, and nerve problems, there are alternative treatments such as botanical therapies; massage; nutritional therapies; vitamin and mineral therapies; and iodine supplements.

Fibroids–believed to be partially caused by the build-up of estrogen–are nonmalignant tumors that grow within the uterine wall. If detected early enough, fibroids can be treated with holistic therapies. However, the first step in prevention is to have your gynecologist perform uterine examination each year.

Treatments for fibroids include Botanical Medicines combined with Nutritional Therapies. Holistic health consultants advise fibroid sufferers to cut down on red meat, fried and sugary foods, whole milk dairy products, and processed foods. In addition, women at risk for fibroids should eliminate coffee, tea, chocolate, and cola drinks, and to consume more beans, rice, soy products, fresh vegetables, fruit and fish. In addition, colonic irrigations may effectively shrink fibroids by clearing the bowel tract of the impurities that may cause the disorder. However, botanical, nutritional and colonic therapies are less effective for the treatment of large fibroids. Surgery is normally recommended in severe cases, although each woman should inquire about alternatives to hysterectomy.

Menopause occurs when a women no longer menstruates and, as a result, can no longer bear children. Even after menopause, a woman’s body continues producing estrogen, though far more slowly. Common symptoms include fatigue, nervousness, excessive sweating, breathlessness, headaches, loss of sleep, joint pain, depression, irritability, and impatience. Treatments for menopause include Botanical Therapies; Deep breathing exercises; Estrogen replacement therapies; Exercise; Nutritional Therapies; and Vitamin and Mineral Therapies.

Each month, from puberty until menopause, a woman’s body prepares to conceive, nurture and give birth to a new human being. The ovaries begin to manufacture estrogen, which triggers the thickening of the uteral lining with blood vessels, glands, and cells in anticipation of new life. However, as many as 70 per cent of women experience some form of menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) during their period, and 15 per cent have cramps severe enough to be disabling. Other symptoms of dysmenorrhea, in addition to cramping pelvic pain, include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Treatments for dysmenorrhea include Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Nutritional Therapies, and Osteopathic Therapy. Many women also suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), often caused by uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, and endometriosis. Other factors believed to contribute to menorrhagia are iron deficiency, hypothyroidism, vitamin A deficiency, and intrauterine devices. The first step in the treatment for menorrhagia is to rule out serious causes. When the excessive bleeding has been determined to be functional, i.e. not due to any disease, therapies that may be beneficial include Nutritional Therapies, Thyroid Hormone supplements, and Vitamin and Mineral Therapies.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is the term used to describe the physical or behavioral changes that many women undergo 7 to 10 days before their monthly periods begin. The principal physical and emotional symptoms of PMS include water retention, weight gain, abdominal bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, swollen hands and feet, constipation, feelings of depression, irritability, tension and anxiety, mood swings, a change in sex drive, and inability to concentrate. The symptoms, which reappear at about the same time each month, usually disappear once a woman’s menstrual period begins. Treatments for premenstrual syndrome include Botanical Therapies, Exercise, Taking a natural sedative such as chamomile tea before a hot bath, Homeopathic Therapies, Nutritional Therapies, Progesterone Therapy, and well as walking, jogging, tennis and yoga.

Vaginitis, or yeast infection, is one of the most common reasons women visit a physician. The symptoms for vaginitis include frequent, moist vaginal discharges, vaginal odor, vulval or vaginal itching, burning or irritation, and painful urination after intercourse. Several factors increase a woman’s susceptibility to vaginitis. These include the use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, diabetes, pregnancy, obesity, excessive, improper douching, a vitamin B deficiency, menopausal thinning of the vaginal wall, and cuts or abrasions in the genital area. Treatments for vaginitis include acidophilus–the friendly bacteria–which may either be taken in yogurt form, swallowed in capsules or tablets, or applied externally as a topical treatment; Nutritional therapies, which recommend a basic diet low in fats, sugars and refined foods, and an increase of acidophilus yogurt and garlic.
